Plan Highlights:

Eligible Postdocs can elect to enroll in the optional,
100% employee paid group legal plan, MetLaw. The employee premium to
participate in MetLaw is $18/month and the minimum period of participation is the 12 month period of the 2019-20 plan year (10/1/19-9/30/20).

MetLaw can save employees hundreds of dollars in attorney fees for common
legal services like these:

—Estate planning documents, including Wills and Trusts
—Real estate matters
—Identity theft defense
—Financial matters, such as debt-collection defense
—Traffic offenses
—Document review
—Family Law, including adoption and name change
—Advice and consultation on personal legal matters

Who can be covered?

Your spouse and dependent children also have access to the plan benefits should you opt into this program.


The employee premium to participate in MetLaw is $216/year payable over 6 monthly installments of $36 via PayPal automatic payments.

Taking your Hyatt Plan with you when you leave UMass

The Hyatt Legal plan is portable, meaning you can take it with you when your tenure at UMass is complete. The standard portability period is 12 months. Click here to find out more.

How to End Coverage

This benefit is for a minimum of 12 months. The only exception is when you leave employment prior to the expiration of the 12 month benefit period. In that case, please contact us and we will end the benefit and refund any portion of the premium paid beyond your termination date.

COVID-19 Related Updates

Beginning April 1, 2020 through June 30, 2020, MetLife is offering employees that would like to keep their Hyatt legal plan benefits due to a COVID‐19 related leave of absence, unpaid leave, or termination the option to either port their plans for three months or choose our standard 12 month portability. To apply for portable enrollment, call the Client Service Center at 800.821.6400, Monday ‐ Friday (8am ‐ 8pm ET) to enroll in a portable plan. You must enroll within the month of May or June and within 30 days from your last date of employment.
