Outschool for Families: STEM Desert Island Survival just for UMass Grad families

Class Description: Students will first learn about the engineering design process. They will then be presented with the challenge of how to survive on a deserted island. Their biggest challenge will be shelter from the wind at night. Students will follow the constraints and build a structure that will withstand a wind storm (from a hair dryer). They will test their design in class and share what they have learned with their classmates. This class does not aim to teach any industry specific engineering principles but rather the development process behind a solution; define, plan, model, test, redesign. At the end of this class students will be able to: • Ask questions, make observations, and gather information about a situation people want to change to define a simple problem that can be solved through the development of a new or improved object or tool. • Develop a simple sketch, drawing, or physical model to illustrate how the object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem.

Ages: for children 7-12

Cost: $1 to reserve your child's spot--this cost can be submitted for reimbursement through the GEO childcare reimbursement
